New rumour / report in Auto Express this week;
Production of the Vauxhall Adam has only just begun, but bosses are already looking at ways to expand the range in 2014 and beyond. Top of their wish list is a high-performance VXR model plus a cabriolet to compete with the Fiat 500C, Auto Express has learned.
Vauxhall recently announced its return to motorsport with a rally-prepared version of the Adam. The Adam R2 (pictured above) is fitted with a 140bhp 1.4-litre turbocharged engine, and offers an affordable entry point into rallying. A road-going Adam VXR is seen as the perfect spin-off from that programme.
However, a source revealed that it won't share the same engine, instead the potent 202bhp 1.6-litre turbo for the Corsa VXR Nurburgring edition is the current front-runner. Performance should be scintillating with 0-62mph taking less than 6.5 seconds.
An Adam Cabriolet is also in the pipeline, and our source revealed that unlike the Citroen DS3 Cabrio or Fiat 500C, a pop-out removable roof panel is being considered. Designed to slot into the same place as the current panoramic glass roof, it would be a good way of keeping costs down but maintaining the Adam's structural rigidity.
At a ceremony to officially mark the first Adam off the production line, Vauxhall also confirmed that the Adam will be the first car to be fully compatible with the iPhone Siri voice activation function.
There's no precise date yet for the hands-free feature, but if all goes well it could be available by the second quarter of 2013. Existing Adam customers will be able to get a simple software upgrade from their local dealer.
